1/31 Applied Geometry - Inverse Trig Functions

1/30 Algebra 1 - Linear Combination

Today students learned the Linear Combination method for solving systems of equations. They took notes on some example problems in class and then practiced on this worksheet. We went through it together as a class, then they worked on their graded assignment.

1/30 Algebra 2

Today we began Chapter 7. Students were introduced to the idea of fraction exponents, which are another way to write roots. This webpage offers some insight into how this is done. Students took some notes over the rules and example problems. Then they worked on the assignment.

1/29 Applied Geometry

Today we began our work with trigonometric ratios. Students began class by taking some notes of the definitions of our trig ratios (sine, cosine & tangent) and some example problems of solving using trig ratios. We did a worksheet together in class, then they worked on the graded assignment.

1/29 Pre Algebra

Today we began a new Chapter which will focus on graphing. Students took notes on some definitions, then completed a worksheet in class. After we went through it as a class, they worked on the graded assignment.

*Notes will be a graded part of class from now on. Students will receive grades for their notes on a daily basis & these notes can be used on the tests.

1/25 Applied Geometry

Today we began Chapter 8. We are still dealing with similar triangles, but specifically only right triangles. Students were introduced to the concept of the geometric mean and how it applies to similar right triangles. View some further explanation here. 1/22 Algebra 2

In class today, we continued with our work on solving polynomials. In today's section, we were not given a solution to begin with, like we did in the previous lesson. We must find our own possible solutions to check. We do this using the rational zeros theorem. Students took notes on example problems and then did a worksheet in class.

1/18 Algebra 2

Today we started dividing polynomials in order to find solutions. Students took notes on polynomial long division, synthetic division and solving using synthetic division. See some examples here. Students did a worksheet in class, then worked on the graded assignment.

1/17 Pre Algebra

This afternoon we are on shortened periods due to the teachers' in-service at 2 PM. We will be working with the Counting Principle. We completed this worksheet together in class, then students worked on a graded assignment (mostly Chapter 8 review) that they turned in.

1/17 Applied Geometry

Today in class, we continued with the study of similar triangles. Today focused on some different applications of similar triangles.

1) If a line parallel to a side of a triangle intersects the other 2 sides of the triangle, then it divides those sides proportionally.
2) An angle bisector divides the opposite side of a triangle into 2 segments whose lengths are proportional to the other 2 sides.
3) If three or more parallel lines intersect two transversals, then they divide the transversals proportionally

Students took notes from the board, we completed a worksheet practicing the concepts, then they worked the graded assignment.

1/16 Algebra 1

Today students learned how to graph linear inequalities in 2 variables using the process below:
1) Plot the y-intercept
2) Move to the next point using the slope
3) Draw a dotted or solid line
4) Shade above or below the line

Students took notes on some example problems done on the board, then did a worksheet for practice. When we were finished going over it, they worked on the graded assignment due for Thursday. Graph paper can be printed out here.

1/12/07 Pre Algebra


Today students will be solving equations involving percents and finding the percent change.

Examples of the percent equations:
18 out of 20 is what percent?
82% of 250 is what number?
8 is what percent of 75?

We worked through some example probelms on the board, then students did this worksheet in class, and finally they worked on the graded assignment.

1/12/07 Applied Geometry

Today we continued with simialar triangles. We talked about the 3 Similarity Postulates, the Angle-Angle Similarity, Side-Side-Side Similarity, & Side-Angle-Side Similarity Postulates. We went over this worksheet in class together and then students worked on the graded assignment.

1/11/07 Algebra 2

Today's lesson focused on polynomial functions. Students began by taking notes (which is now a graded portion of the class) on the definition, examples & non-examples of polynomial functions. Students learned 2 methods of evaluating polynomial functions as well. We did a worksheet in class then students worked on the graded assignment.

1/11/07 Algebra 1

Today we talked about solving absolute value equations and inequalities. See some examples here. An absolute value equation looks like the following: |2x-1|=8
Our objectives are:

1) Set up 2 equations to solve an absolute value equation
2) Solve an absolute value equation
3) Set up 2 inequalities to solve an absolute value inequality
4) Solve an absolute value inequality

I did some example problems on the board (today was the first day of graded note taking) and then students started the worksheet that is due for Tuesday.

1/10/07 Pre Algebra & Applied Geometry


Both classes will be doing the same assignment today as well. Today we will be using ratio & proportion to make scale drawings. First, the will be taking small cars and using the scale factor, determine the actual measurements of the car. Next, they will be taking the actual measurements and creating their own scale drawing of the vehicle. View the worksheet here.

1/9/07 Algebra 2

Today's lesson focuses on the properties of exponents that will help us with the upcoming sections of the chapter. Examples can be found here. We also added, subtracted & multiplied polynomials (more on these later). Examples can be seen here and here. The assignement due for next time was a worksheet given in class.

1/9/07 Algebra 1

Today we continued with Chapter 6 and working with inequalities. We focused on compound inequalities, the 'and' inequality and the 'or' inequality. Our objectives are:

1) Graph compound inequalities on a number line
2) Write compound inequalities
3) Solve compound inequalities

*Note-both Algebra 1 classes decided to have weekly note-taking grades. They will be responsible for taking notes on the example problems that we do on the board and we be given a grade at the end of each week. They will also be able to use these on the tests from now on.

1/8/07 Applied Geometry & Pre Algebra

Both calsses today, who are learning about ratio & proportions, will be doing the following worksheet in class (Pre Algebra version) (Geometry version). The Pre Algebra version will be completed as a more of directed discussion and the Geometry class will be doing most of the work on their own. There is a writing assignment involved, details are provided in the handout.

1/5/07 Algebra 1

We began Chapter 6 today, which will focus on inequalities. Today's objectives are:

1) Graph linear inequalities on a number line
2) Solve one-step linear inequalities & graph your solution on a number line
3) Solve multi-step linear inequalities

After working through some examples on the board, students completed a worksheet in class and worked on the assignment.

Today we worked with rates & ratios. Our objectives were:

1) Be able to tell the difference between a rate and ratio
2) Simplify rates & ratios
3) Write a ratio

1/8/2008 Applied Geometry -

Welcome back! Today we began Chapter 7 which focuses on Similar Triangles. First we reviewed ratio & proportions, which will be used in the second section for similar triangles. Ratios compares 2 numbers by division & a proportion is an equation stating two ratios are equal. We went through our vocabulary and example problems on the board.  Additional example problems for this section can be found at the following links ( section 1 & section 2 ).
