1) List the order of operations to evaluate an expression with more than one operation.
2) Evaluate expressions without grouping symbols
3) Evaluate expressions with grouping symbols
4) Explain the difference between expressions based on order of operations

We graded the homework that was due for today as well as a worksheet that students completed in class over today's lesson.

8/27/2007 Applied Geometry-Segments, Midpoints and Segment Addition

Today we reviewed last Thursday's notes on the Segment Additon Postulate and midpoints of segements. As a class we worked through some problems in the book and on a worksheet. There was no homework. We will finish up section 2 and begin with section 3 on Wednesday.

Homework:

8/27/2007 Pre Algebra-Order of Operations

Today we reviewed our work from last Tuesday and Thursday and graded our assignment from Thursday. We took notes over section 1.3, which deals with the order of operations when evaluating expression with multiple operations. We went through the notes and example probelms together and then students worked on the worksheet, which will be due on Wednesday.

8/24/2007 Algebra 2-Solving Linear Equations

Today students will be reviewing how to solve linear equations. While this was spread out through a entire chapter in Algebra 1 class, we will review it in one section this year. The types of linear equations we will be reviewing how to solve are: two step equations involving adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing; equations with variables on both sides; equations involving the distributive property; and equations involving fractions or decimals. All of these will be solved using the properties of equality (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). Remember that you will be doing the same operation on both sides of the equation. The video above demonstrates how to solve one of these equations.

Students began the class by taking notes over some example equations. We corrected our assignments from last time first, then went over the notes together. Students then completed a practice worksheet in class and then were free to work on their assignment for Tuesday.

Homework:
pages 22-23 #'s 23-32 all 34 & 38

8/22/2007 Algebra 1-Variables

Today's lesson focused on introducing (or reviewing) what a variable is and what it does. Students evaluated simple expressions, such as x-7 for different values of x. Students took notes over some example problems, then practiced these on a worksheet in class. I then took questions and we graded the worksheet.

Homework:

8/22/2007 Algebra 2-Algebraic Expressions and Models

Today in class, we finished up our work on section 1. I took questions over the worksheet due for today and then we corrected it. Students then completed the lesson test over section one to check their progress on the concepts.

Students took some notes over our next section, 1.2 Algebraic Expressions and Models. We went over the notes together and I sowed some example problems. These examples dealt with evaluating exponents, evaluating expressions (with and without variables) using the order of operations and simplifiying expressions by combining like terms.

Students did a worksheet in class that will be graded and will complete some work from the book.

Homework:
1.2 worksheet (if not completed in class)

8/21/2007 Pre Algebra-Welcome & Syllabus

Today, students received books, the class syllabus, and a handout regarding the website. Your son/daughter should be bringing the website handout home to you to be signed and returned to class on Wednesday. This will be worth 5 points. We are on shortened periods for the first two weeks, so we will meet for only 56 minutes. Make sure you bring your notes notebook to class on Wednesday!

Homework:
Bring website packet to class signed by a parent/guardian
Leave a comment on today's class post indicating that you have figured out how to leave a comment. If you have trouble, send me an email.

8/21/2007 Applied Geometry-Syllabus & Section 1

Today we began class by handing out the syllabus and the informational packet on the website. Together, the students and I went through both packets and I demonstrated how to use the website on the projector.

To begin the first section today, students copied notes from the board, which were mostly definitions. (Point, line and plane, for example). To get some additional instruction regarding the section, click here and click 'Video' next to any of the examples. Students were given a worksheet to complete as an assignment.

8/20/2007 Algebra 2-Real Numbers & Operations

Today students received their class syllabus, explaining the rules and procedures for class. We went through them together as a class to make sure everyone understodd what is expected of them. Then, I gave a brief presentation on how to use the website. Students should be bringing the handout home to parents to be signed and returned. Feel free to contact me via email and/or comment also if you wish.

We began Algebra 2 with some notes on the real numbers, which is the set of numbers we will be using in this class. We defined some properties (associative, commutative, identity, inverse). Students took notes and then completed a worksheet in class. If it was not finished, it can be turned in on Wednesday.

8/17/2007 Welcome Back!

I would like to welcome everyone back to school! The website will be back on Monday with class information, assignements, etc. If you are new to the website, feel free to browse through last year's posts on the right hand side of the page to see what kinds of materials you can find here. Students will receive a demonstration on how to use the website next week.

Have a great weekend!
